January - Photo a Day

Here are the photos I took for the Fat Mum Slim Photo-a-Day challenge. All of these have been taken using my phone. I am pleased with most of them and I must remember to take photos while I am out and about!  Each month I am going to share with you the photos from the months challenge and also a couple of my favourites. I have to confess I did miss a few days but no-ones perfect. You can check out more of my photos here.

Mid Week Gratitude

Thanks to technology I am wrote some of this weeks gratitude post from a car-park while I was waiting for hubby to pick me up. So I guess my first thing I am grateful for is technology. I love being able to share photos here and write notes to myself using this app ColorNote Notepad Notes To Do

Here is my gratitude list for this week -
  • Technology, especially my phone. Never wanted a smart phone, now I could not live without it.
  • FatMumSlim for sharing next months Photo-a-day list, (February already)!!!
  • My walk to work, being able to gaze at the sky; cloud watch and find rainbows.
  • Dark chocolate and detox tea, what a great combination.
  • My new favourite thing - Coconut Oil. (Hair is looking less frizzy).

Cut Print Stamp

This is a birthday card that I made.

As I am addicted to using my Gelli printing plate I have a massive pile of monoprints waiting to be cut up to be used for cards and other art and crafting projects. I love using my monoprints in my card making as it makes the cards even more original and special. I printed the background using my Gelli plate. The paper picks up all the marks and textures that are on the Gelli plate, it can be quite surprising the amount of detail that can be achieved. I cut-out the circles from red paper using my circle cutter, the red paper matched the red in the print and complimented the teal flowers. I used a stencil as a guide to cut-out the larger flowers from a monoprint and the smaller flowers were created using a little flower punch, punched out from textured paper.

My art and the cards I make have become so much more colourful since using the Gelli plate, I have become braver with colour combination. I really loved how this card all fitted together. I hope you enjoy this weeks offering.

Monoprinting with a Gelli Printing Plate

I love monoprinting. In the past I have tried different types of mono printing; I have used glass to draw into and press object into, I have used oil based inks, and a printing press using perspex as a printing plate. I found out about the Gelli Printing Plate at the beginning of 2012. I find it a great medium to use and really love the textures it picks up and how easy it is to use.

For more information on the creators of the Gelli plate follow this link.

I love my Gel Printing Plate.

The equipment you need to print with is quite minimal.

      Gel Print Plate
      Perspex Sheet
      Brayer
      Paint
      Imagination

These photos show the Gel printing plate and the Perspex sheet. You can see how responsive and flexible the plate is, it is great for picking up textures of delicate objects such as feathers and leaves. The Perspex sheet is used to protect the plate and if I am doing prints on top of prints the images will line up. I use the black lines that frame the plate to guide me as to where I need to put the paper.

Brayers are used to apply the paint to the Gel printing plate and for rollering textures into the paint. I have three types – A soft roller, a hard roller and a small soft roller.

I use various paints each type/consistency reacts differently. The paints I enjoy using are Liquitex, they are Heavy Body Artist Acrylic Paint, they have a thick consistency for traditional art techniques using brushes or knives, as well as for experimental, mixed media, collage and printmaking applications.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create.” -Albert Einstein
If you use your imagination for mono printing your prints will be very varied and interesting.

When it comes to mark-making on the gel plate, you can use various things such as bubble wrap, sequin waste, buttons, rubber stamps, embellishments, fruit nets, dried leaves, stencils, corks and anything that makes a mark. The softness of the Gelli plate picks up the delicate textures amazingly. I have previously used feathers and dried leaves, the print is really clear and it shows all the details.

How to monoprint
First you squeeze the paint out onto the plate; a little goes a long way. So a little blob is enough.

You then gently roll out the paint with the soft brayer.

Make sure that the paint is spread out evenly.

You just need a thin coating of paint on the plate.

This is a wooden embellishment that I discovered in the art shop, as soon as I saw them I thought they would be great to use on my Gelli plate. I am always on the lookout for interesting textures and things to use on my plate. To use it I stuck it to a cork using a glue stick> I was very pleased with the marks it made.

This photo shows me adding textures and marks to the printing plate. Here I am using taffeta tied in a bunch, I used my small roller to press the taffeta into the plate.

This is the plate after I have made all the marks, stamping, and rollered onto the plate.

Here I have put the paper over the plate and gently pressed down and gave it a rub. The print is then transferred from the plate onto the paper.

This is the print that I produced. You can see all the textures that have been made from the various things that I used for example; the circles were from a bottle top, the thin lines were from matchstick stuck onto card, the windmill shape at the bottom is a hand carved stamp that I made and the blocks at the side are from an eraser.

Once you have made a print it needs some where to dry, this is the drying line that I have made to hand my prints; it can hold up to 20 prints at a time.

Here are some of the cards I have made using the monoprints from my Gelli Plate

Mid Week Gratitude

I think it is good for us to appreciate and be grateful for things in life however big or small. It is easy to take things for granted and not really notice how much joy they can bring, how often do you stop and watching the birds in the trees or how a leaf falls from the tree. These are some of the things I am grateful for.

This link on Tiny Buddha is a good starting point. I am going to sharing with you all what I am grateful for.
'Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are' - Marianne Williamson

Here is my gratitude list for this week -

  • Going home for Christmas, being able to spend time with my family, always means so much to me.
  • Honey, lemon and ginger, soothing my throat and helping me recover.
  • The Apothecary Circle, so much knowledge, support and love.
  • New notebooks from Paperchase, I am going to be organised this year. I even have a notebook for my blog!
  • My husband for looking after me while I was ill, I am the worse patient there is!

Water a day challenge

I am taking part in the Apothecary Circle and one of our first things to do is to make sure we are drinking enough water. 80-100 ounces (2.37-2.96 litres) a day of water! It is advised that we do a 'morning flush', this is to drink 16-32 ounces (0.47-0.95 litres) of water first thing in the morning before doing anything else. So far so good, I have started to drink 27 ounces (0.8 litres) every morning. It is quite tough but I think the pros far out weigh the cons. Then sipping water throughout the day, having a glass of water before and after your meals and drinking extra if you drink coffee. It is hard to remember to drink, there are apps out there such as Water Your Body to remind you to drink your water. I have decided to test this one out as I think I could use some reminding.

Hydration is key to being healthy. If you want to change one thing this year make sure you are drinking enough 'pure' water. Are you up for the challenge? I know that in the past I have struggled with drinking enough each day. Over the Christmas holiday I was really bad and drank about 5 glasses of water the whole time I was visiting family. It is a easy habit to fall out of but such a good habit to have. Proper hydration really is a life changer. Here are some of the benefits of being hydrated; headaches disappear, it helps to regulate sleep and on waking you feel refreshed, it helps improve digestion, skin and hair quality improves and hormones begin to balance out. I will write more about what I have personally discovered as the challenge progresses. I hope this has inspired you to take up the challenge. Cheers.

My Word of Intention for 2013

I have never had a word of intention for the year before, but I think the universe wants me to have one or it thinks I need one. Three things have lead me to having a word for 2013. The first was the workbook from Susannah Conway this is a really useful workbook and helps you to say goodbye to 2012 and gives you focus for the following year. It took longer to fill out than expected but I enjoyed the process. I was then introduced to ‘2013 Creating Your Incredible Year’ by Marissa at Moondaugter this workbook looked interesting and inspiring, it didn't take me that long to decide to purchase it. What it's about - 'The 2013 Create Your Incredible Year workbook, planner & calendar is an incredibly popular & useful tool to help you plan out & make happen your most incredible year in life or business (or both!). Over the last four years, thousands of women have used this workbook with the most amazing results. It’s the best planning tool available to help you make your year your most exceptional yet! Used by entrepreneurs, artists, mamas, creatives, coaches, teachers and women of all ages, the Creating Your Incredible Year workbooks are filled with dozens of pages of powerful worksheets & a printable calendar to help you create your amazing new year'. I have worked though most of it and it is more in depth than the first one and takes that much longer but I think it is worth it. It is also a bit of work in progress at the moment as there are parts of it I need to revisit.

The third thing that spurred me on to get a word for the year was the course that I am taking, The Apothecary Circle run by the lovely Laura Emily. It is a full year of holistic living while earning a certificate in keeping a home apothecary. Here is what it's about- 'learn how to craft up your own herbal remedies, how to replace your medicine cabinet with fresh, gorgeous food, develop a foundation for abundant and vibrant health by engaging in our monthly group challenges- dive into a buffet of ecourses and workshops read up on weekly lessons, monthly tutorials and be surrounded by a gorgeous and thriving community of women, all desiring to weave some earth medicine into their own lives. And if you feel called to, use your time in the apothecary circle to apply towards an accredited course to become a certified Holistic Coach, and more.' Wow I am going to be busy this year....

With all that said, my word for the year was ‘change’ until on my journey back to London last week when my word changed! It is now ‘BELIEVE’...I was the passenger in our car while Kris drove us home after spending 6 days on the Isle of Wight with family. Not feeling too great, I was drifting/meditating and the word believe was brought to my attention, it just popped into my mind. It feels so right and special. So that is how I have a word for the year.

Out with the old in with the new...

I decided at the end of last year that for the beginning of 2013 I would have a new blog. I feel as if I have outgrown Tumblr and I want to do more with my blog than what Tumblr can offer. So here it is, it is a few days late as I came down with a stinky cold at the beginning of the week, so I spent New Years Eve and Day in bed. I hope to be a regular blogger, writing about things I am doing, what interests me and of course sharing my artwork and photos. I hope you enjoy what you see. Here is a link to my old blog.
